: says to Jarl Joe MacBainCompanio:.... *6'5, 290 pounds of pure muscle and speed. I was a Torvaldslander, small by some standards but always ready to open a can of whoop-ass on any who stand in My way. My muscles bulging through a fur-lined vest and leather pants drawn tight. I pulled the Northern helm that is also horned from behind My neck and place it on My head then strapped it tightly under my chin before dropping the noseguard over My nose and face. I lift My left hand and remove from behind My right shoulder the 36" Torvaldsland round shield with a steel boss of 10" in the middle and place it on My right arm, My forearm fitting in the loops in the back as I tighten the straps, then lift My left hand to My left shoulder and remove My axe which has a haft length of 30" and a 6" single-bladed axehead which is razor sharp and is made of steel over iron from it's sheath on My back and hold the middle of the haft tightly in My left hand, at a 45 degree angle on My left shoulder with the blade edge facing You, left elbow out a few inches ready to swing through as if I were chopping through a tree. I have the 28" gladius (22" blade and 6" hilt) in a sheath hanging from My right shoulder and one 14" long dagger (8" blade and 6" hilt) sheathed in My left black tharlarion leather-skinned boot laced up to mid-calf. I stand 15 feet from You at a 45-degree angle, My right side facing You as I bounce on the balls of My feet, the shield covering My right side from shoulder to knee as I focus My dark brown eyes that can pierce into a person's soul on You with a nod knowing that business is about to pick up, even though You outweigh and out height Me. I guess I will need to rely more on speed rather than power this go-round*
6’5”, 290lbs, right side leading half open stance
Northern conical helm…..I’m not a fan of horned helmets…*L*
36” torv shield in right hand. For the record, these shields are held, generally behind the boss (which protects the hand in the event your shield is cut to pieces, which was often the case), not strapped to arm.
30” axe with 6” blade in left hand
22” glad straped on back. Sword lengths generally refer to blade lengths, ie, a 28” glad would have a 28” blade, a 22” glad would have a 22” blade…

: says to |===The Karian Torv===| :.... A lefty =I smiled and nodded at 5 paces and I just nod and start to move towards You dead on, pushing off My left leading foot to close to 2 paces before I would move at any pace and hold Your nerve to see if You flinch as I come to the start point, it was now that I shove My right shoulder out to My right as if I am going to Your left but pull My body off to My left and stride a quick 2 paces to your right side as I am rushing over I push out My left held shield so that the inside edge (My pov) is now coming outwards and forward to My perspective as I get shoulder to shoulder with You, I rip around on the ball of My left foot to send My left shoulder forward and get My shield rim behind Your shield to pull Your shield to Me and hope to lock them up and grip You there to slow any twisting from you
In the spinning on the ball of My left foot I am also bring forward and down in a swift slice My right blade from My right shoulder , My right elbow pulled backwards hard and fast at My right ribs to get the blade down as My right wrist rotates so that My thumb is facing away from Me and the cutting edge of My blade turns in to You. I aimed for the lower mid section on My blade to sweep into Your leading right shin and across for Your trailing back left ankle as I hope the shield grip, side step and blade swing would be blinding You as to the intent of My blade till it was too late to react
Counter…clean enough, but I can see your way of stating range here might cause confusion. You come to 6 feet, make your tricky little move….right, left and “stride a quick 2 paces to your right side”. Now this means what exactly? Some might take it as you are now 2 paces from his right side. I’m guessing you are taking two pace long steps diagonally to your left, so that you are coming in at his right side, your left shoulder probably about 3 feet away or a tad more from his right shoulder as they come even and you do the pivot. This gives you just enough space to do the shield lock.
Reaction…clean but will probably be nulled by a quick pivot to face you.

: says to Jarl Joe MacBainCompanio:.... *I return Your nod then see You move forward and start to Move to My right, but My dark brown eyes remain on You and I do not bite on the feint but when You move to Your left I quickly sidestep 1 pace to My left then pivot on My left foot bringing My right leg back and out of harm's way as You try to pull My shield to You then attempt to slice at My shins, getting them out of the way just in time. I remain steadfast in My positioning, digging My feet into the sand as I then move My axe over My shield and down, blocking Your sword slice with the bottom part of My blade, parrying it in a clockwise manner off to My left as I then
bring My axe swiftly back blade parallel to the ground in a left to right motion and slice at Your right thigh in an attempt to disable one of the tree trunks you have as legs and bring you down to a knee, hoping to keep You from using Your full strength this battle and overpower Me*
Counter… First I’d like to address the matter of timing. What you are doing is basically moving out of range for him to make his attack as stated before he has even begun it, thus making the possibility of his shield pin or sword attack having any chance of succeeding before he has even attempted them. This of course leads one to wonder why he would realistically make them if you were already too far away. It’s like stepping back. Yeah, sure it’s a good idea, that’s what you might do for real. But he has to make an attack, and to do so he has to be in range. And so you can step back, or left, or wherever, but it’s not really fair to your opponent to have his whole first post voided because you simply stepped out of harms way before he did it. Fighters need to accept that their opponent needs to get in range before he makes his attack. If you defend by saying you move out of range, why would he not simply move to where he wanted to be in relationship to you before he made his attack? So I am not a big fan of this type of defense to an opening attack, and will deduct fighters who simply try to move out of the way as their opponent closes in. It is countering a counter. Now having said all that, this is not a blatant bending of the rules here. I can see what you’re doing….he goes right, you go left at the same time, and I’m not about to punish you for quick thinking, so I looked at this as though your sidestep is a little behind his forward left movement, timewise that is, so that his pin and attack had a chance of succeeding….
So now the sidestep left and pivot would still be enough to avoid his attack. The way you have stated this defense could be better though. You sidestep and pivot to avoid his pin and attack, then you dig in and do your clockwise block/parry defense. But his attack is quick and either you have avoided it with footwork or you have not. The axe movement needed to be started simultaneous with your pivot to have a chance of actually working. The block/parry was not really needed and will most likely impede you from being able to make a quick attack with your axe now.
Reaction… you should have included that you twist the axe so the blade is pointing towards your intended target, as it was just pointed the other way. The main problem here though is one of range. He came in and attacked you with a longer weapon than you have, and what saved you was your lateral movement, out of range of his sword. He came in to a little over 3 feet away from you and attacked. You stepped sideways (away from him) 1 pace, or 3 feet. So you are about 6 feet apart and you are trying to hit his back thigh with a 30” axe that you are holding mid-haft. Simply put, you stepped out of range to avoid his attack, and failed to step back into range before making yours. -1

: says to |===The Karian Torv===| :.... Not sure how that works but will try and keep the flow, feeling My shield just collide with Yours as You move to My right and block the side step and My sword gets parried off to My right I was in a left leg lead as I see it and right up against You now, I used the shove from Your parry to let that turn My right shoulder backwards and sweep My right leg back with it so that I was left shoulder facing Your chest I guess, as I felt the parry of My blade I thrust My left arm forward as I did not get to the side of You before and hope My shield is rammed on the face of Your shield. I drove My shield forwards and downwards a little to get Your axe shaft and drive it off to Your left as I step through in the thrust with My left leg to pass My left shoulder past Your shield rim
with Your axe out of the way I pushed My left elbow out to send the back edge of My shield from My body and hope to be past the edge of Your shield near Your chest, as I then pull My left fist towards My gut in the natural motion of the shield to pull My left leg back again as I make a slight twist on the ball of My right foot and push My left side hip out to try and drive the reverse edge of My shield back from Me and right into Your chest and chin to drive You back and maybe knock You out at this close range, the natural action was turning My body back on to left leading to face You
Counter…I had a feeling range was going to get confused here. You had gotten close enough to hit him with your shield, but then he sidestepped left (which in this case is away from you too because you are coming in at his right side) and pulled his right (closer) side back even more, so you are not right up against him. Still you have to defend what you are given, and he attacked as though he were in range. And here I find fault with your defense. First, moving your right leg back more will indeed move it out of the path of his axe. But it will leave your left leg in the path of his axe haft, with the blade hopefully landing between your legs, maybe even clipping your left thigh on its’ natural returning motion as he swings it to his right. So the pivot needs the shield block /parry to make the defense work. And I find your defense unclear. Are you saying you hoped your shield was already rammed against his or that you are thrusting forward to do this now? I have to go with the second by your wording here so I see you trying to ram your shield against his shield prior to actually defending against his axe attack. This would slow down your ability to block his axe in time, so you are lucky I thought he was out of range to begin with. -1
Pausing to adjust range and position to keep the flow here…going with what is given.
Reaction…A little awkward wording but I can follow what you’re doing. Clean.

: says to Jarl Joe MacBainCompanio:.... *Feeling My axe caught by the shield I bring it back in front of My and to My chest right behind the left back side of My shield as I simultaneously slide a pace and a half to My right in the hopes of getting behind Your defense as You try to move forward with Your shield. As Your left arm moves forward to push Your shield out I then
slide My axe out from behind My shield and turn it so the rounded blade is facing Your left arm and I slice from My right to My left, hoping to slice true and through Your elbow hoping to disable Your shield arm and put it out of cvommission for the spar*
Counter…I don’t like this. He has just knocked your axe to his right with the inside right rim of his shield and is following that motion through and pushing the left outside rim of his shield towards you so that he gets it past the inside rim of your shield and then quickly reverses the action to bring his outer left shield rim into your chest and chin. You slide to your right a full pace and half, but you don’t do this instantly. As you move his shield is coming towards your chest very quickly given the close range. Yes you will get your chest and chin out of the way of his attack, but as you are sliding right you will move your left shoulder into it. If you had gone left it would have placed your shield in between you and his shield rim, but moving right at this point is not going to save you, unless you had also moved your shield over to your left to protect your left shoulder or impede his attack. -1 and a good bruise to your left shoulder and upper arm and your left arm would be numb.
Reaction…OK, but I’m saying this would be a slow, light attack due to you just getting hit.

: says to |===The Karian Torv===| :.... Excellent, I watched as You did a slide by and pulled My left elbow back in to create an acute angle on the back of My shields rear, I was going for a reverse thrust anyway and now I could see and feel You axe came back over to Your right side and across Your body to do so, I wasted no time and dug My left heel in the sand and drove My left elbow back but now with My left forearm tight on My left ribs to get that rear edge of My shield to slide along Your axe shaft and get the rim under Your axe head to just hold Your strike off and try and push Your axe on Your shield and pin it there in a shield sandwich
This would leave My right blade completely free and I turn on the ball of My left foot to bring My right shoulder forward, as I do I lift My blade and bring it over My right shoulder and downwards in a clattering chop to send the near quarter of the blade edge down and into the exposed left side of Your neck where it meets Your left shoulder and end the match
Counter…clean
Reaction….clean enough, but you could have added bringing your sword down at a leftward angle so that he can’t avoid it by pivoting or side stepping as easily.

: says to Jarl Joe MacBainCompanio:.... *pivoting on My right footand bending back to move My shoulder out of harm's way as I swiftly and simultaneously clear both shields and bring My axe up and to My left before you try to pin it to My shield, meeting Your blade halfway up with the back part of My axe, then moving in a counterclockwise motion out to My left and down as I then
come back in a fierce movemebt from My left backl in a hard forehand slice and try to cut deep into Your right knee at the ball and socket, hoping to at least make you walk in a limp for a good while*
Counter…I see what you are trying to do, and I’m going to say this is clean but I would make a few points. First, you need to state how you are pivoting better. Which shoulder are you moving and are you pivoting it forward or backward? You know you mean pulling your left foot (and shoulder) back behind your right your right foot. He knows it. I know it. But you don’t actually say it. Second, your pivot back would just clear you of his attack, and his sword would come sweeping down in front of your chest, which is now pointed to your left. But your arm is still in the way, particularly if you are trying to parry his sword with it, so now it comes down to timing, because if you don’t hit the back of your axe blade into his descending sword and parry it out to your left fast enough, it is likely going to hit your left elbow area. Which makes this a judgment call and although I’m going with you here, it is best not to let the judge have to make these timing decisions. In other words, try to keep the spar in your own hands rather than putting it in the judges hands.
Reaction…I’m going to be kind here and say a forehand slice from your left is obviously going to your right, but you really need to say, because many judges are more picky than I. I do have trouble with range here. You are in a right side lead, your left shoulder back. He is in a left side lead. The distance between your sword (or axe) shoulder and his right knee would be too great for this attack to work as stated. You would need to bring your sword shoulder forward more, either by stepping up with your left foot again, or twisting your shoulder forward, to be able to reach his knee. -1

: says to |===The Karian Torv===| :.... A bit lost on that but okay as You lean back and free up the shields to pull Your axe out and block My blade I could feel the blade bounce back and would know You had the inside track now, as soon as I felt this I spun on the ball of My left foot and drop My right knee as the right leg and shoulder of Mine goes back, as I lean back in the strain I pushed My now freed shied that came down with Me across My upward left knee and around the front to make the base of the shield hit the sand and cover My shins and flanks as I feel Your axe clatter on the face of My shield, My right sword naturally drawn back tp My right side as I had turned…I looked up and nodded- well fought
Counter….Hmm, I could have sworn your right leg was already back, but this is clean enough. It’s not a move I would recommend, but it’s safe as a final defense post.
Result:
Winner by points: Joe 9-7
Injuries:
Maximus – bruised left shoulder
Remarks: This was closer than points indicate I think. A couple of range errors cost Maximus the fight here. You were using a shorter weapon to begin with and your grip on your axe was midway up too, and he would have the longer reach due to his size. So you can’t step out of the way far enough for him to miss you and then hit him without stepping back in range. And if you are in closed stance with your weapon side back, remember your range is much shorter than in an open stance. Basically, you are losing roughly a shoulder width distance in range, so it is important to move that shoulder towards your target as or before you attack if needed. This is usually required for low attacks where you are already losing range due to the angle of your arm/weapon.

with Your axe out of the way I pushed My left elbow out to send the back edge of My shield from My body and hope to be past the edge of Your shield near Your chest, as I then pull My left fist towards My gut in the natural motion of the shield to pull My left leg back again as I make a slight twist on the ball of My right foot and push My left side hip out to try and drive the reverse edge of My shield back from Me and right into Your chest and chin to drive You back and maybe knock You out at this close range, the natural action was turning My body back on to left leading to face You
Counter…I had a feeling range was going to get confused here.
